Milestones

My 10 month old daughter started crawling this week. After weeks of being a hair’s breadth to crawling this has got to feel pretty good for her. She’s been crawling backwards for a month and it was getting frustrating for her to get further away from her goal every time she tried moving towards a toy on the floor. I don’t know how many times we had to extract her from underneath the couch She eventually learned to aim her posterior towards the direction she wanted to go (That was just too funny.). She’s a pretty smart cookie.

She learned to stand up on her own with the aid of a couch within a few minutes after learning to crawl. Now that was just too quick of a transition for me. I was walking at 6 months, and my son was walking by 10 months, but neither of us learned to do several things in one day like this little tyke.

This weekend we went to the family cottage and went swimming in the lake. It was the baby’s first time in the “big water”. She loved it. She was splashing and squealing with delight. It was fun to see her experience something like that for the first time. It was a great time.

My 8 year old son earned his Whittling Chip at Cub Scouts (this chip signifies they have earned the right to wield a knife) after going through a safety course on how to correctly hold, use, and care for, a knife. He will be going into the Third Grade in the fall.

My 16 year old daughter got her drivers license and is probably terrorizing her neighborhood in a four wheeled weapon. She also got her first job as a lifeguard and swimming instructor at a local pool. She’s certified in Adult, Child and Infant CPR. She recently told me that she was so tired after working “almost” 40 hrs a week. I feigned sympathy and welcomed her into the world of the wage slave.

I’m so proud of them all!

(*blink*) I clearly remember the older two being in diapers last week. ;)

What the heck happened?!

That is pretty great, they are so young still and look at what they have achieved already. There is something to be said about being proud parents and it is a feeling like no other, until you are a parent you really have no clue what it means.

Abby had the same issues with crawling. Then with walking. Now, though, she is practically running when she sees something she wants. It’s great to see her learn.

I’m guessing mine will be walking before the end of August if she keeps this up. Time to baby-proof the house. Although he knew this day was fast approaching, “Mr. Procrastinator” (A.K.A. me) never started baby -proofing the house. Now he’s going to have to do it an afternoon, instead of over the course of 2 months. Big dummy.

Don’t even joke about that! It’s entirely within the realm of possibilities, and I am not ready for that, nor am I ready for being a grandfather for that matter.

I know how you feel… my ‘baby’ is studying for his learner’s permit, and my first born just entered into her final year as a teen. Just yesterday they were both learning to walk too.

What makes things harder is the large age gap in between children. I feel bad for the youngest one. I don’t get down on the floor and do horsey back rides and stuff as much as I did for the eldest. She’s definitely missing out. I was in my early twenties then and Arthritis, Sciatica and Lumbago were words you used to poke fun at your parents. It’s not that funny now. ;)

Once they start moving, it’s all over. At least when they’re relatively immobile they stay put. Not that this is a new experience for you on its own, but every kid is different, and by now you’ve probably let down your guard some.

My wife’s been dreading the mobile stage.

You are right. We’ve let our guard down, and started putting the knick-knacks and breakables back up, but now they’ve gotta go get packed back up for another couple of years.

      Yippeee! :( ;)

I am just getting ready for the first one. Most of the things you are talking to me is an abstract.

I can’t wait until my daughter learns to crawl. Right now she just uses her feet to push her self forward. Then again she is only 2.5 months old.
