We're not too strict on the naming convention. I have sewn many fabric patches that he has recieved over the last couple of years on my son's red scout vest. They don't count towards rank advancement, but they are earned by participating in a specific event. I call them merit badges, but a better term for them would be patches. My son is almost nine. He turned "Bear" this summer at a crossover ceremony. Charlie,
