meme – seven random things

Posted by Chuck on November 8, 2007 at 3:52 pm.

I was tagged by Erica at Crummy Cupcake with this meme. Having never participated in a meme this is new ground for me. Consider this an opportunity to learn a little more about one of the ‘D is for Dad’ contributors.

The rules of the game are:

  • Link to the person that tagged you, and post the rules on your blog.
  • Share seven random and/or weird facts about yourself.
  • Tag seven random people at the end of your post, and include links to their blogs.
  • Let each person know that they’ve been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

I know, the suspense is killing you. Here goes:

  1. When I was a kid in the fourth grade I made my first foray into entrepreneurship by buying $10 worth of candy at the local 7-11 and reselling it for a profit during recess. My enterprise thrived for a few weeks until “the man” finally got word and shut down the operation.
  2. A couple of years ago my son and I were on a rather large lake in a borrowed row boat when the pull to start the motor broke. We had never been on a boat without someone that knew what they were doing. After a few moments of concern and several minutes of laughter we figured out how to start the motor by turning the flywheel by hand.
  3. My one and only experience with hunting occurred when I was about 14 years old. I went out with an older friend and ended up shooting a rabbit, but only enough to wound it. Of course we ended up having to kill it at close range. This experience was enough to turn me off hunting forever.
  4. My favorite book is The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. It was published in ‘84 and I read it the same year. I was 13 at the time and the main character is 12. I’m sure this had something to do with my affinity for the book. I’ve since read it many more times as an adult and still love it.
  5. I believe that Paint Your Wagon and Brigadoon are two of the best musicals ever shown on the small screen.
  6. In the summer of 1988 I worked on a shrimp boat off the coast of the Florida Keys. We had to cut the run short due to Hurricane Florence. The experience was awful and not one I’d wish on anyone. All we drank on the boat was Gatorade and to this day I can’t stand the smell of it. Have you seen The Deadliest Catch!?
  7. The first movie that really scared me was Phantasm. It was released in ‘79. I would have been 8. Why was I allowed to watch this? It may explain my fascination with Stephen King in the years following.

OK, that wasn’t so bad and it gave me a good reason to look up some rather obscure links.

I haven’t been blogging for very long so the list of people I’ve met is pretty short. As a result, I cheated and did not go with random folks as the rules state. Instead I’m tagging people that have participated in meme’s in the past and a couple I think will enjoy it. I don’t know what the etiquette is around meme participation, but know that if you don’t want to play along that is just fine by me.

Let the tagging begin!

  • Oh, no. This is what I get for being a loyal reader? Work? I think you were just removed from my Christmas card list… oh… wait… let me doublecheck… YES!

I’ll get right on that, sir. (Well, it might be a week or so before I can get to it, cuz I’m sooooo full of ideas right now, but I’ll get to it.) Thanks for thinking of me!

    The candy thing? Brilliant!!

  • melissa says:

gee…thanks. can i do it tomorrow? not sure i have 7 people to tag. i might have to just tag 7 random blogs…how to make friends or enemies in the blogosphere. cool…
i’m going to have to start thinking because, i live a life of such glamor and excitement.
    see ya around…

  • Sweet! Thanks for playing the game. This is great. Nicely done.

  • Avery says:

Geez! You people REALLY want me to do this meme, don’t you?! This is the third time I’ve been tagged for this one, but as I told the other taggers, I have declared MemeHiatus 2007!! thru the end of the year. I will, however, do this meme in January 2008. Will the suspense kill you by then?

Thanks so much for thinking of me, though! I’ve been under the weather and have had a broken washer for the past month (finally fixed today–YAY!!), so I’m trying to catch up on my blog reading now. Sorry to be so absent!

  • Avery says:

BTW, The Deadliest Catch is a favorite in our house. (Hubby’s a fisherman, and his dad used to do that for a living.)

  • BusyDad says:

I still owe Deb from Missives a meme (it’ll be up by nightfall, PST, I promise!). But yours is next on the list, sir. I might have to tag you back because, really, I don’t know too many folks out here…

  • Chuck says:

@Deb – One meme and I’m off the Christmas list huh. Oddly enough I think that is a suitable punishment :) . Thanks for not saying you want to wring my neck.

@Melissa – Welcome to the club! I was clueless coming into this thing and may have less friends after it is done. ;) Thanks for your willingness to play along.

@Avery – I didn’t realize you had the hiatus going on. That is the reason I didn’t tag Dan Leone. The suspense will be tough to deal with for sure! By the way, I have a real respect for your husband and FIL – the fisherman gig is REAL work!

@BusyDad – Sorry to pile them up on you but thanks for playing. I’ll understand if I get tagged back. We new guys need to stick together.

    Take care all!

done…did it. only passed it to 6 lucky bloggers, though.

  • SWC says:

Hi there…happened by from SuchSimplePleasures… Love your list. The candy for profit story is classic. That’s entrepreneurship at it’s finest!

  • Josi says:

Hey, I sold candy are recess too, and then I sold penciles. I was making a freaking killing at it, and then my teacher told me I was basically a drug dealer (except that it WASN’T drugs–yeah, I didn’t get the comparison either) and that I’d be expelled. Scared the beetlejuice out of me and I went home crying. Fun list!

  • Dan Leone says:

Any movie that has Clint Eastwood singing, can’t be that bad!

By the way, I have only declared a Meme-atorium for 2007. I will do any in 2008. All you have to do is to review “one blog that is better than yours” in the same week that you tag me.

    Have fun!

  • Chuck says:

@Dan – I like that, a nice trade off. Thanks for stopping by.
