Free Audio Books for everyone - Librivox

Librivox

The goal of Librivox is to turn all public domain books into audio books and make them freely available on the net without the hassle of attaching a license to complicate things for the listener. This is an incredibly useful service that benefits everyone.

When I was growing up I was introduced to Aesop’s Fables and Grimm’s Fairy Tales and remember enjoying them immensely. These are fine examples of books in the public domain. As I got older my appetite for the written word grew and Edgar Rice Burroughs did a fine job of feeding it. The Tarzan series was like honey to me.

You can search through the Librivox catalog many different ways, such as by title, author, genre, status, reader, etc. This provides a nice way to get to what you are after pretty quickly. Many people have volunteered to be readers and they do a great job. With that said it is awfully nice to discover a reader whose voice you really enjoy and track what they have recorded.

I plan on stuffing many of the fables and short children’s stories onto a disc for playing for the small kids while on the road and at nap time. For me, I think I’ll be listening to the Tarzan series again as well as some Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes.

Take some time to check out Librivox and reacquaint yourself with, and introduce your children to, some of the classics and favorites from your childhood..

Great post. I’m downloading something as I write this comment.

Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for reminding me about this service. I looked into it last year. I stumbled upon a couple of recordings I didn’t like but overall the quality was very good. I even bought myself a headset and microphone so I can volunteer to do a recording myself. Somehow, life got in the way of recording audiobooks.

No problem Dan - the least I could do! I’ve considered doing some recording myself. Just gotta get the gear and a couple of hours of quiet time. Looks like 3-4AM may be my only option.
